From representative to participatory methods, there is not one kind of democracy, rather varying degrees of democratized power that involve different arrangements of rights and responsibilities among actors of the political process. We analyzed recent examples of referendums and constituent assemblies with special attention to the constitutional efforts in the hemisphere that centered the basic human rights of housing, health, education, alongside rights for nature and non-human life.

The United States has long deemed themselves the watchdogs of what it means to be a democracy in the hemisphere. This myth repeats through mainstream media in various kinds of messaging that has come to ripe contradiction. Our analysis shows a pattern in which the U.S asserts their own economic and political interests at the expense of actual democracy and humanitarian rights, weaponizing sanctions and other safeguard measures as a form of economic warfare without just cause and at tremendous loss of lives, of environmental integrity, and of trust. The result imperils citizens of the U.S. as much as those in countries whose policies are unfairly tampered with or controlled by foreign influence.
